Dower House Honey
Dower House asked me in to capture the harvest at their Berkshire apiary. As a raw honey lover myself, this one was an easy yes. Hive to jar, all of it by hand, and yes… I ended up in a bee suit.
There have been hives in the grounds of the family home since the early 1900s, so this lot have been at it for well over a century.
They control the whole process from hive to jar. Artisan methods, unpasteurised, unblended, straight from the beekeeper.
They even build their own hives. Cedar, handmade in the workshop out the back. As a trained carpenter myself, I probably spent longer in there than I was meant to.
Capturing it properly meant getting in amongst the bees, though…
Hence the suit. A first for me, and not how I expected the day to go.
Frames coming out, the comb, the extraction, and the jars at the end of it.
Glass jars, aluminium lids, recycled card, and not a scrap of plastic. No bubble wrap, no sellotape, none of it. Thanks to everyone at Dower House for letting me in on the process, and for putting up with me in the workshop. Lovely people and of course, lovely honey.
